What's instantly obvious is the fact that he clearly didn't bother past making sure his cuts didn't get infected, because Sollux's symbol is the newest, most visible scar on his stomach. There's other scarring across his stomach, of course, including one faint jagged line all the way across, continuing onto his sides (and around his back as well, obviously. Once he gets the shirt up to his chin, it's clear that there's a decent amount of old wounds across his chest as well.
